In 1971, I began my journey exploring the visual arts recreationally at the University of Connecticut. Working as a photographer for the school newspaper, I focused on sports and particularly basketball and football. These are some of my early photos that were taken over 50 years ago.
Although I had less time as a graduate student in Boston during the mid-70s and early 80s, I still enjoyed taking pictures and would occasionally have enough money to buy a ticket to a Celtics game when they were playing one of my favorite teams such as the Philadelphia 76ers. With a bit of gall and clever machinations, I occasionally “managed” to position myself on the floor with the professional photographers and take pictures of iconic superstars such as Julius Erving (aka “Dr. J”) and George Gervin (aka “The Iceman”) who are featured below.
As a lifelong exuberant fan of UConn sports and especially men and women basketball, attending a game with a camera is one of my greatest joys. Here are some shots from t the 2025-26 Eastern Regional Finals against Michigan State and Duke as well as a few photos from a Lady Husky game against Providence in December 2025.
Doing the Duke game , Coach Hurley had a vivid exchange with one of the referees that I was fortunate to capture sequentially.
My love of sports photography extends to high school sports reminding me of my bygone years.
